The Bismarck-Mandan Tennis Association was formed in 1972 to further promote tennis in Bismarck-Mandan. The organization immediately began sponsoring tournaments. It invited participants from all over the state, as well as from South Dakota, Montana, and Canada. USTA tournaments were adopted in the late 70's.
The association formed leagues in the late 70's, recognizing that not all tennis players wanted to participate in tournaments, yet wanted some form of competition. In the summer of 2003 a summer junior league was instituted.
The association continues to focus on tournaments and leagues, however, it has expanded to provide free lessons and provide grants for competitive junior players who wish to attend USTA sanctioned tournaments.
In addition, the organization works with the Bismarck and Mandan park boards to assist with the maintenance and improvement of local tennis facilities.
"The purpose of the association shall be to promote tennis, and to work with all individuals, organizations, and businesses interested in promoting tennis within the Bismarck - Mandan area." BMTA Bylaws
